Transformative Artistry: My Literary Retreat

by

At times, her words graced me with gentle, soft reminders to self-love and self-appreciate. Other times her words uncannily overwhelmed me. Blinding, disorienting, and completely unexpected–I became engaged to self-reflect into spiritual, social, and personal growth; and audacious celebration.

Describing the experience as a “reminder  and an “engagement” however, is just not worthy of what her writing caused in me.

I experienced actual growth as she made me become completely immersed in her literary art…while being made cognizant of how much I’ve already grown in this lifetime. The reflex was immediate.

Right now, I feel poorly equipped to offer how…caring, graceful, raw and transformative, powerful…and AWAKENING her heroic artistry is, in, ‘Questions for Ada.’ I cried. Not from sadness. But, from love. From gratitude. From a younger version of myself’s nostalgic sense of what could be. Does that even make sense? It was…it felt, scary. I realized how infrequently I have been allowing myself to feel this way. Enlightened to the potential capacity I could have in limitless self-love and eternal growth.

She made me want to turn inward and tell myself, “Thank You. Thank you for doing everything you’ve ever done. To Become, You. Thank You.”

In as few as five words, Ijeoma Umebinyuo made me feel the most empowered, actualized and validated I have felt all year.

I cannot give Ijeoma enough justice. If I could meet her, all I would want to do is hug her as she so intimately and profoundly describes as, a sister. With each turn of the page, your own unique and special place in this world becomes encouraged and strengthened and enabled.

If you need a pick-me-up, I strongly recommend this read.

Dedicating just a few minutes to this book, which I know for most of us is all we can afford, can significantly impact how you champion your day.

Writivism.org describes, “These are poems for the lost, for the found, for the brokenhearted, for the lover, for those drowning in home–they are for all of us.”

As 2018 quickly approaches, this was the mental and emotional nourishment I needed to enter a mindset of self-fulfilment and renewed vigor.

Cheers to Our Womanhood and to a bountiful New Year!
