International Women’s Day

by

It’s been a relentless women-empowered and women-led start to 2018.

From #MeToo, #Timesup, to today’s #PressforProgress, women are uniting and organizing in significantly social, political, and economic ways to achieve gender parity.

The social traction and empowered stance to demand for better is palpable and tenaciously infectious.

The American Mom is excited to join in and contribute our voices to advance women, domestic and abroad. Today, in arms with many others across the globe, we are wearing purple to celebrate, raise awareness, and observe International Women’s Day.

What is International Women’s Day (IWD)?

Also known as the United Nations (UN) day for Women’s Rights and International Peace, IWD annually celebrates women’s achievements throughout history and across nations.

According to IWD.com, the official International Women’s Day website,

…purple is known to symbolize women, justice, and dignity.

Customarily, the UN and its technical agencies have promoted and supported the participation of women as equal partners with men in achieving sustainable development, peace, security, and full respect for human rights. IWD, however, advocates that the story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no individual nor one organization. Rather, progress in women’s rights advocacy belongs to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights (1). The American Mom could not agree more. We fully and firmly support ‘Women’s Rights are Human Rights’ and more inclusively, ‘Gender Rights are Human Rights.’

With each daily gesture, choice, action, and message, we are all collectively accountable for the advancement of women’s rights.
